Austrian Visual Memory
Austrian Visual Memory - "Die Chronisten" is the name of the association which founded the "Osterreichisches Zeitzeugenarchiv" (Archives of Austrian Witnesses) in 1995. These archives were constituted for the purpose of conserving the memories of past and present day to day life as witnessed by Austrians. The testimonials gathered through this initiative, and successively filed away, take the form of digital video recordings. So far, it has been possible to make a successful record of the memories of the elderly folk, whose testimonials go way back to the days of Austro-Hungarian domain (1900-1918). The next phases of the project will be dedicated to the 1920's, the first years of the 1930's, the Second World War period, etc.
"In the days of European unification, we believe it is fundamental being conscious of our history. We are convinced that it is only through being aware of ones past, that one can fully understand the present and prepare oneself to face the future. We have the duty to interrogate our parents, grandparents and great grandparents while they are still capable of responding to our questions. Besides this, we also have the duty to put their answers together and to make an accurate report of them: such documentation constitutes a priceless heritage that we must pass on for the good of those who will come after us."
